Innova Hypermobility Foundations

A structured, one-on-one physical therapy pathway for hypermobile bodies

Innova Hypermobility Foundations is a specialized physical therapy program designed for people with hypermobility, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), or poor tolerance to traditional rehabilitation and or significant deconditioning.

This program was created for patients who often feel like standard physical therapy moves too fast, flares symptoms, or does not account for the complexity of living in a hypermobile body. Instead of jumping straight into intensity, we focus on what matters most first: safety, control, nervous system regulation, and sustainable progress.

This is real physical therapy — just done intentionally.

Why This Program Is Different

Many people with hypermobility have had difficult experiences in rehabilitation. They may have been given exercises that were too aggressive, progressed too quickly, or based only on the painful body part without understanding the bigger picture. This often leads to more guarding, more flares, less trust in movement, and less confidence in physical therapy.

Innova Hypermobility Foundations was built to change that.

This program is designed to:

  • reduce flare frequency and improve recovery
  • improve joint stability and neuromuscular control
  • increase load tolerance safely
  • support nervous system regulation
  • build confidence and functional consistency

The goal is not temporary relief. The goal is sustainable progress.

We assess the whole body, not just the painful area, because meaningful recovery depends on how everything works together.

Who This Program Is For

This program is best suited for patients who:

  • have hypermobility, EDS, HSD, or suspected hypermobility
  • experience chronic pain with frequent flare-ups
  • have had poor tolerance to previous physical therapy
  • deal with fatigue, dizziness, tachycardia, or other autonomic symptoms
  • feel fearful, guarded, or uncertain with movement
  • have inconsistent functional tolerance from day to day

This pathway is especially helpful for people who need a calmer, more predictable entry into physical therapy.

It is not primarily intended for straightforward post-operative rehabilitation or uncomplicated orthopedic cases.

What The Program Is Designed To Do

The purpose of Innova Hypermobility Foundations is to provide a clear, repeatable, one-on-one care pathway that helps patients enter therapy more safely and successfully.

Rather than unstructured early rehab, this program offers a thoughtful progression designed to:

  • create a safer starting point for physical therapy
  • improve how the body experiences movement
  • reduce symptom escalation between visits
  • improve body awareness and control
  • support better recovery from activity
  • help patients build trust in their body again

We are not just prescribing exercises. We are helping reshape the way your body responds to movement, load, and recovery.

Program Structure

Innova Hypermobility Foundations is:

  • 1:1 physical therapy
  • 45-minute visits
  • typically scheduled 2 times per week for 6 weeks
  • 12 total visits
  • billed through insurance using standard physical therapy codes

This frequency is intentional. It allows for:

  • better nervous system consistency
  • tighter cueing and skill development
  • reduced symptom escalation between visits
  • faster trust-building
  • more confidence in movement

For many hypermobile patients, too much time between visits can lead to loss of rhythm, increased uncertainty, or flare-ups. Seeing patients more consistently early on helps create a more stable and supported experience.

Our Treatment Philosophy

This program is designed specifically for hypermobile bodies. Instead of forcing progress, we build it carefully.

Our therapists prioritize:

  • control before strength
  • mid-range before end-range
  • quality before intensity
  • consistency before complexity
  • recovery before overload

We respect that hypermobile bodies often need a different starting point. That may mean beginning with subtle movement, breathing, supported positions, isolated muscle control, dissociation, or nervous system down-regulation before advancing to more traditional strengthening.

That does not mean less skilled care. It means more precise care.

A Structured Progression

Innova Hypermobility Foundations follows a structured progression for patients with connective tissue laxity and load intolerance.

Stabilization

We begin by building safety, mid-range control, autonomic regulation, and more predictable recovery.

Controlled Loading

From there, we introduce gradual strengthening, proprioceptive training, and carefully guided loading strategies.

Functional Integration

As tolerance improves, we progress toward strength, endurance, and more task-specific movement for real life.

Advancement is based on consistent symptom recovery and improved control — not time alone. This helps reduce flares and supports meaningful, lasting gains.

Clinical Focus By Phase

Phase 1: Safety & Orientation

Visits 1-2

The first phase focuses on understanding your body, reducing uncertainty, and preventing early flare-ups.

This may include:

  • full evaluation and movement assessment
  • education on pain versus damage
  • understanding load sensitivity and pacing
  • identifying supported positions
  • beginning early control strategies
  • introducing breathing, mindfulness, meditation, or calming cues
  • learning self-checks to better monitor response

For some patients, the most important first step is learning how to feel safer in movement again.

Phase 2: Control & Stability

Visits 3-6

Once a foundation is established, treatment begins to focus on improving control, coordination, and stability.

This may include:

  • proximal stabilization
  • improved cueing and motor control
  • rib-pelvis coordination
  • identifying the true driver of symptoms, not just the pain generator
  • closed-chain exercise
  • isometric loading
  • early functional strengthening
  • proprioceptive awareness
  • slow tempo, mid-range movement

Some patients may need to begin with even more basic foundations, including isolated muscle control and dissociation, before progressing further. That is okay. The program is designed to meet your body where it is.

Phase 3: Load Tolerance & Integration

Visits 7-10

As control improves, the focus shifts toward integrating movement into daily life with more resilience and less symptom escalation.

This phase may include:

  • gradual load exposure, as tolerated
  • functional movement training such as sit-to-stand, walking, and work-related tasks
  • energy budgeting
  • flare prevention strategies
  • controlled variability to improve adaptability

The goal is not just to do more. It is to help your body do more without paying for it later.

Phase 4: Reassessment & Transition

Visits 11-12

The final phase focuses on measuring progress and deciding the right next step.

  • objective reassessment of symptoms and function
  • clinical decision-making about progression
  • transition planning for next-stage care

Possible next steps may include:

  • progression into more traditional physical therapy
  • continued hypermobility-focused care
  • discharge with a maintenance plan

We want patients to leave this program with more than symptom relief. We want them to leave with a clearer path forward.

What Patients Can Expect

Patients in this program can expect:

  • one-on-one care with a physical therapist trained in hypermobility-informed treatment
  • a gentle but highly skilled approach
  • a clear progression plan
  • treatment that respects tissue sensitivity and nervous system overload
  • an emphasis on breathing, control, stability, and recovery
  • a whole-body assessment, not just a focus on the painful area

This program is designed for people who need physical therapy to feel safer, smarter, and more individualized.

Our Bigger Goal

The Innova Hypermobility Foundations program exists to serve a population that is often underserved in traditional rehabilitation settings. Too many hypermobile patients have been told to simply strengthen more, stretch more, or push through symptoms — only to feel worse.

We believe there is a better way.

By building safety first, improving control before strength, supporting the nervous system, reducing flares, and progressing intentionally, we help patients create a more stable foundation for healing and function.

The goal is not just to get through therapy. The goal is to build a body that feels more predictable, more supported, and more capable over time.

You Are Not Starting From Behind

If you have struggled with physical therapy in the past, that does not mean you have failed. It may simply mean your body needs a different approach.

Innova Hypermobility Foundations was created for exactly that reason.

If you are looking for a more thoughtful starting point — one that respects the complexity of hypermobility and focuses on sustainable progress — this program may be the right fit.
